Tips for Using Chalk Paint Safely and Successfully with Kids: Our Green Dinosaur Dresser Adventure

Updated: Oct 1

Today, I transformed a simple nightstand into a green dinosaur-themed dresser, all while ensuring that the process was safe and enjoyable for my little helpers.

Let the Adventure Begin!

The project started with the concept of turning a basic dresser into a creative addition to my children's room. I decided to involve them in the process to spark their creativity and grow their confidence in helping. With chalk paint, brushes, and plenty of ideas, we embarked on this colorful adventure.

Testing, Testing, 1-2-3!

Before diving into the project, I wanted to ensure that the chalk paint we were using was not only vibrant but also safe for my kids to handle. After all, their little hands would be all over the dresser and covered in paint.

I took the time to research and test the paint, making sure it was non-toxic and odor-free. The last thing I wanted was for our fun activity to turn into a fume-filled disaster. The American Paint Companies' paint passed with flying colors (pun intended!), and we were ready to bring our dinosaur dresser to life.

Roar-some Creations Unleashed

The process began with a simple but essential step: gently sanding away the old finish using 200-grit sandpaper. This created the perfect surface for the new paint to adhere to, setting us up for success.

With the prep work done, we grabbed our paintbrushes and got started. The excitement in the air was contagious as we carefully applied the first coat of green paint over the red. It took two full coats to fully cover the previous color, but the transformation was amazing! Watching the kids get involved in every step was a true highlight—seeing their joy as they contributed to the project was priceless.

To protect all of our hard work, we finished by applying two coats of topcoat for durability. Now, the dresser isn’t just a practical piece of furniture—it’s a cherished memory and a symbol of creativity and family bonding.

The Final Masterpiece

After a few hours of painting, the dresser was now a majestic green dinosaur. Their beaming smiles and proud eyes reflected the success of our project.

Are you thinking about tackling a DIY project with your little ones? I can’t recommend it enough—there’s nothing quite like the sense of pride and connection that comes from creating something together!
